Life in space is harsh and it can fundamentally change a man,sometimes for the better,and sometimes for the worse. In case of Frank,it changed him in ways we still can not comprehend. When he left the MedBay after his latest accident -wich involved him,an asteroid and terminal velocity- he just wasn't the same same man anymore...
